Who We Are

The UCSF Family and Community Medicine Residency Program is based at San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) and within the Community Health Network of the San Francisco Department of Public Health. Since 1973, the residency program has trained 405  family physicians for practice in urban, underserved communities. More than 60% of our graduates currently practice in state- or federally designated shortage areas, primarily in community-based health centers or public-hospital-based clinics that provide primary care to low-income, underserved communities.

Two fourth-year chief residents share administrative responsibilities for the inpatient and outpatient clinical practices and participate actively in teaching.

The residency program and SFGH serve as major educational sites for the UCSF Department of Family and Community Medicine. SFGH is the leading site for a required, six-week medical student clerkship in Family Medicine. Family nurse practitioner student training and demonstrations of team practice are conducted in association with the UCSF School of Nursing. Fellowship training, faculty development, and research are increasingly important educational activities at the SFGH site.
